Amoxicillin is commonly used, but don't abuse it!

2021-05-14

The most commonly used medicine in pig farm is amoxicillin. In pig production, amoxicillin is loved by the majority of pig farmers for its wide application, which can be injected intramuscularly, drunk with water and mixed with feed, and has many advantages such as large usage, small side effects, good effect and cheap price.

However, many pig farmers take amoxicillin as cold medicine or anti-inflammatory medicine, which is actually a great misunderstanding of amoxicillin.

1. Do not take amoxicillin as anti-inflammatory drugs

Many pig farmers use amoxicillin for the purpose of anti-inflammation, thus treating amoxicillin as an anti-inflammatory drug. However, being anti-inflammatory is not the same as being an anti-inflammatory drug, but amoxicillin is actually an antibacterial drug.

Antimicrobials, by nature, are drugs used to treat bacterial and fungal infections, and they can inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi or kill them outright. Antibacterial drugs are also known as antibiotics and antimicrobials. In addition to amoxicillin, which belongs to the penicillin class, erythromycin, ceftiofur and enrofloxacin are all common antibacterial drugs.

For inflammation caused by bacterial or fungal infections, antimicrobials reduce inflammation by killing the bacteria or fungus, and do not act directly on inflammation. Therefore, antibacterials have no effect on viral infections or inflammation caused by other causes, so they are not used as anti-inflammatory drugs.

2. Abuse of antibacterial drugs may be "no drugs available"

The wrong use of antibacterial drugs such as amoxicillin can harm the organism because although antibacterial drugs can sterilize, they do not distinguish which bacteria are harmful and which are beneficial. In fact, there are many bacteria distributed in the organism, under normal circumstances they are in a state of mutual restraint and balance, and the pigs are fine, but after taking antibacterial drugs, no matter harmful, beneficial or bacteria that have no effect on the organism will be killed together, the balance of the organism flora will be broken, resulting in the overproduction of some other bacteria, but will bring health threats to the pigs.

Secondly, bacteria will be resistant to antibacterial drugs. Every time you take antimicrobial drugs, there will be some bacteria with strong resistance to escape, and after taking antimicrobial drugs for more times, the bacteria that are lucky to be screened out will become stronger and stronger, and the resistance of the flora reproduced by these bacteria will be stronger, and over time, the therapeutic effect of antimicrobial drugs will become worse and worse. Once drug resistance is formed, if pigs are infected by such bacteria again, it will be difficult to find effective antibacterial drugs for treatment, and it is likely to cause serious consequences.

3. How to take amoxicillin correctly?

A. Amoxicillin is commonly used in the following areas

①Streptococcus, Pasteurella and Haemophilus parvum, Staphylococcal disease in pigs (amoxicillin + dexamethasone intramuscular injection) early infection is effective.

②The treatment of piglets yellow and white dysentery and swine dysentery.

③For sow's systemic infection and postpartum anti-inflammation.

B. Amoxicillin powder mixing dosage

At present, amoxicillin preparation is generally 10% powder, then 1 kg of 10% amoxicillin should be used per ton of feed to prevent general bacterial diseases. This is also the recommended dosage of many veterinary medicine factories.

4. Notes

Amoxicillin drinking water administration is generally better not to exceed 3 hours, the administration time will be too long to cause reduced effectiveness or ineffective! The practical experience of using amoxicillin in pig production shows that attention to details is needed to achieve success in either application method.
